| Benevento, city a lot interesting because rich of history, intact art and mystery, conserve many of its ancient ones vestigia. One history, far more than 3000 years, from the 1185 a.C.: the legend, supported from historical references, of it it attributes the foundation to the mythical Diomede, landed, after the destruction of Troy, on the coasts of the Daunia (Puglia). E' remembered from Livio for the famous battle of the Caudine Passes and from Dante, in 3° the song of the Purgatorio (Divine Commedia), laddove meets Manfredi di Svevia, died in the battle of Benevento of 1266. Sannitica, roman city, longobarda and papal conserve the testimonies, in some only or, however, rare cases, of all these historical periods. To see: the Arch of Trajan (the most beautiful Roman triumphal arch in the world), the only collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts found outside of Egypt, the church of Santa Sofia, a rare example of Byzantine church in Lombard period. |
